SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA
The Chief Public Health Inspector reports as follows:—
Insanitary Dwellings—Housing Acts and the Local
Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1953
Before giving details in this field of activity for 1956 it is well to
consider matters outstanding when the Annual Report for 1955 was
published.
Chigwell Road— Clearance Order. It is gratifying to record that 1956
saw the rehousing of the occupiers of these dwellings and the
demolition of many properties. Some difficulty was experienced in
rehousing some occupiers particularly those persons living alone.
9 & 10, Belgrave Terrace. Reference was made to the fact that these
two dwellings had remained unrepaired so it is interesting to note
that in 1956 they were purchased by one person who proceeded to
convert them into one property. By the end of the year the
conversion was almost complete. The final product is pleasing to
look at and will provide a home for some years to come.
5, 6, 7, 8. 9, Inmans Row. The Official Representation by the
Medical Officer of Health was confirmed as a Clearance Order in
1956 by the Minister of Housing and Local Government.
99. High Road, E.18, the subject of a voluntary undertaking, was
still standing at the end of 1956.
11, 13, 15, 17, Voluntary Place were demolished during 1956.
33, High Road, Woodford Green, the subject of a closing order, was
purchased by a builder and at the conclusion of 1956 reconditioning
was nearing completion.
1-27, Sultan Road. The Minister of Housing and Local Government
has now confirmed the compulsory purchase order without
modification.
Aldersbrook Hutted Camp. Reference has been made in the last
two Annual Reports to this hutted camp correctly referred to as a
"blot on the landscape." The site, situated on the verge of Wanstead
Flats, a vast area of grassed open space forming part of the Epping
Forest land, was conspicuous against such a background.
It is pleasing to report that at the end of 1956 one licensee only
remained to be rehoused. Many huts had been demolished during
the year and it is hoped that by the end of 1957 the site will be
cleared completely and all evidence of the unsightly area removed.
