Births.
The births registered during the year numbered 2,575. Of these 1,359 born to parents
not residing in Heston and Isleworth were transferred out while 223 born outside the district to
Heston and Isleworth parents were transferred in. This yields a nett total of 1,439 births comprising
729 males and 710 females. Of the 1,216 children born in this district 593 were born
in hospitals or nursing homes.
The Birth rate for the year was 14.18 as compared with 15.1 for England and Wales.
The excess of births over deaths or what is called the "natural increase of population"
was 563 as compared with 588 in 1937.
The number of illegitimate births in 1938 was 37 as compared with 48 in 1937, 40 in 1936,
49 in 1935 and 48 in 1934.
Stillbirths.

The trend of the stillbirth rate in recent years is shown in the following table:—

Year.Heston and Isleworth.England and Wales.
19300.690.69
19310.580.67
19320.430.66
19330.580.62
19340.500.62
19350.590.62
19360.480.61
19370.350.60
19380.440.60

Stillbirths are due to causes acting before birth or during birth. All these causes are not
known but all investigations have shown the need for improved ante-natal care and improved
midwifery. At the present moment these are the only methods available to prevent this loss of
potential additions to the population.
Deaths.
The number of deaths registered in the district during 1938 was 1,951 but of these 1,217
did not belong to the Borough while 142 residents died outside the Borough. This yields a
nett total of 876 deaths made up of 453 males and 423 females. The death rate calculated
from this nett total of deaths is 8.6 per 1,000 population as compared with 9.46 in 1937. When
this death rate has been adjusted to the age and sex distribution of the population by the use
of the area comparability factor supplied by the Registrar General a death rate of 9.0 per 1,000
population is obtained and is statistically comparable with the death rate for England and Wales
which was 11.6.
The number of deaths from zymotic diseases (smallpox, measles, whooping cough,
diphtheria, scarlet fever, enteric fever and diarrhoea) was 14 as compared with 13 in 1937.
The chief causes of death during 1938 were heart and circulatory diseases 278, cancer 154,
diseases of the respiratory system 61, and tuberculosis 58.
Infant Mortality.
During 1938 the deaths of infants under one year of age numbered 66. This yields an
infant mortality rate of 46 per 1,000 live births as compared with 53 for England and Wales.
The infant mortality rates for Heston and Isleworth and for England and Wales since 1930
