one month are due almost wholly to prematurity, congenital malformations or congenital debility
and it is hoped that as ante-natal care and supervision of the health of the expectant mother
improve a reduction in these neo-natal deaths will ensue.
Child Mortality.
During 1938 there were 20 deaths of children between the ages of one and five years.
The chief cause of child mortality during the year was pneumonia.
Maternal Mortality.
During 1938 there occurred 4 deaths due to causes associated with pregnancy or childbirth.
This yields a maternal mortality rate of 2.70 per 1,000 total (live and still) births as
compared with 2.97 for England and Wales. The maternal mortality rates for Heston and Isleworth
and England and Wales since 1930 are shown below: —
Year.
Heston and Isleworth.
England and Wales.
1930 6.40 4.22
1931 5.06 3.95
1932 2.76 4.04
1933 4.89 4.32
1934 2.93 4.41
1935 4.66 3.94
1936 1.95 3.65
1937 3.29 3.11
1938 2.70 2.97
In any small area considerable variation in this rate is liable to occur and serves to emphasise
the need for skilled supervision of pregnancy and labour.
