Area and Population.
The area of the Borough is 7,219 acres and includes 42 acres of water. From the bank of
the River Thames the land rises slowly and towards the northern boundary reaches about 100 feet
above sea level. The subsoil consists largely of "drift gravels" with some pockets of clay at
the western end.
The population of the Borough at the 1931 census was 76,254 and the Registrar-General's
mid-year estimate of population for 1938 is 101,500.
The number of dwelling houses in the area at the 1931 census was 17,124; at the end of
1938, according to the rate books the number was 27,417.
Social Conditions.
No significant change in the social or industrial condition of the Borough occurred during
1938.
The rateable value of the Borough is £890,864 and the sum represented by a penny rate
is £3,488.
The district is largely a dormitory for workers in the London area but has shared to some
extent in the industrial development which has taken place around London in recent years.
The total amount of out-relief disbursed to Heston and Isleworth residents during 1938
was £20,830.
According to the Ministry of Labour and the Juvenile Employment Bureau the average
number of unemployed resident in the Borough during 1938 was 1,244 men, 556 women and
79 juveniles.
No evidence has been forthcoming during the year to show that (a) any causes of sickness
or invalidity have been specially noteworthy in the area (b) any conditions of occupation or environment
have had a prejudicial effect on health or (c) unemployment has exercised any
significant influence on the health or physique of children or adults.
Marriages.
The number of marriages which took place in Heston and Isleworth during the year was
798 and corresponds to a rate of 15.7 persons married per 1,000 of the population of all ages and
conditions compared with a rate of 17.5 for England and Wales.
