(e) Chemical and Bacteriological Examination of Foods.
Chemical examinations of food samples are carried out by
the Public Analysts, Mr. G. Taylor, F.R.I.C., and Dr. J. H.
Hammence, F.R.I.C., of 20, Eastcheap, E.C.3, and bacteriological
examinations by the Counties Public Health Laboratories, 66,
Victoria Street, S.W.1.
(/) Clean Food Campaign.
During the last few years traders and the public alike have
become more clean-food conscious. This has been brought about
by judicious publicity on all phases of food hygiene.
No opportunity is missed in reminding all concerned that the
clean food campaign has come to stay and it must be a progressive
feature in Food Factory, Shop, Canteen and Home.
The District Sanitary Inspectors carry out routine visits to
all premises where food is prepared. Informal talks with the staffs
on the necessity for absolute care and cleanliness in food handling
materially help to keep the important subject well to the fore.
Lectures in connection with the campaign continue to be given.
Reminders were sent to 850 traders during the months of May
and August calling attention to the Council's Byelaws re Handling,
Wrapping and Delivery of Food, and Sale of Food in the Open Air.
Laxity in "food handling" undoubtedly developed during the
long war years. We have made some definite steps forward since,
but owing to the great increase in cost of wrapping papers, containers,
protecting screens and cabinets, overalls, etc., many traders
find it difficult to attain or maintain the standard they desire.
The free use of Public Conveniences and washing facilities
throughout the Borough has been continued.
