Houses Erected During 1951
During the calendar year 1951, 16 new houses and 79 new
flats have been erected.
14 war destroyed houses were rebuilt by private enterprise
and 74 new houses and flats were erected by private enterprise.
Most of the Council's schemes are now the development of
small sites, infilling between older development on war-damaged
or vacant land, in some cases this entails the erection of a pair
of houses only. This process takes considerably longer than in
dealing with a large estate where a number of buildings can be
undertaken at one time.
During the early months of the year the weather was extremely
bad which delayed the completion of several schemes. Most of
the accommodation now under construction is of three-storey flats
with two bedrooms or two-storey flats with one bedroom. A few
houses for the higher income group have been completed. The
larger sites developed during the year include 24 flats Chingford
Road, 22 flats Beechwood Drive, 18 flats Stoneydown and 9 flats
