Meat Products.
The Public Analysts were called upon to examine four different
samples of Canned Meat Products. These consisted of samples of
Corned Mutton and one sample of Corned Beef. Extracts from
their report are as follows :—
"The reason for submitting these samples for examination
was that in some cases when the tins were opened the contents
were found to show black discoloured spots or areas. Bacteriological
examination showed that the meat was sterile and a
special examination was made for the presence of harmful metallic
contamination. The results of these special examinations was
to show that in the surface layers of some of these meat products
traces of lead were found varying between seven and twenty
parts per million, whereas analysis of the inner portions of the
meat showed the presence of lead amounting to only between
five and six parts per million.
