I. THORPE COOMBE MATERNITY HOSPITAL.
Alterations and Extensions.—
The following renovations were carried out at the Maternity
Hospital during the year:—
Resident Medical Officer''s and Matron's Quarters.—Wash down
throughout.
Basement.—Lime washing throughout.
Ground Floor (Maternity Ward).—Whitening ceilings and
painting walls, etc., throughout.
Ground Floor (Premature Baby Ward).—Provision of humidifier.
General.—Removal of blackout, replacement of glazing, etc.
A scheme was approved for the improvement of the Kitchen,
amounting to £655 for the first portion and £495 for the second.
General.—(a) Form M .C.W. 96A (Ministry of Health).

2. Number of maternity beds in the Institution (exclusive of
isolation and labour beds)—48.
2a. Number of beds, if any, included under item 2 which have

treatment.—Variable according to requirements. No
special reservation.
3. Number of maternity cases admitted during the year—1,131
plus four miscarriages (including ante-natal and postnatal
admissions).
3a. Number of women treated during the year in the ante-natal
beds shown against item 2a. (These women should be
included also against item 3)—156.
3b. Average duration of stay of expectant mothers in the antenatal
beds shown against item 2a—4.5.
4. Average duration of stav of cases in the lying-in wards—
13.7.
5. Number of cases delivered by—
(a) Midwives—877; (b) Doctors—118; Total—995.
6. Number of cases in which medical assistance was sought by
a midwife in emergency—271.
7. Number of cases admitted after delivery—7.
8. Number of cases notified as—
(a) Puerperal fever—Nil; (b) Puerperal pyrexia—26.
9. Number of cases of pemphigus neonatorum—Nil.
10. (a) Number of infants on a supplementary feed on discharge—
91 complemented, 24 artificially fed.
(b) Number of infants wholly breast fed on leaving the Institution—851.
11. (a) Number of cases notified as ophthalmia neonatorum—1.
(b) Result of treatment in each case—Satisfactory.
