The demand for Home Helps has been as follows during the past
eight years:—1938 (178). 1939 (125), 1940 (128), 1941 (105), 1942
(140), 1943 (175), 1944 (133), 1945 (130).
The appointment of one whole-time home help was sanctioned,
but not proceeded with because no suitable applicant could be found,
probably owing to the low rate of pay (Hetherington Scale)—this
has been remedied during 1946.
STERILIZED MATERNITY OUTFITS.
A total of 350 sets wore supplied and 145 outfits were issued
below cost price.
INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT, ETC.
One child was sent to an institution under arrangements
approved by your Committee.
The following numbers of confinements occurred at the Institutions specified (Walthamstow residents only):—
Thorpe Coombe Maternity Hospital | 995 |
Maternity Homes in Walthamstow | 67 |
Mothers' Hospital, Clapton | 58 |
Forest Gate Hospital | 28 |
Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford | 6 |
City of London Maternity Hospital | 7 |
Other Maternity Homes | 60 |
Total | 1,221 |
The total for 1944 was 1,164.
The number of evacuations carried out under the Government/ L.C.C. Scheme has been:—
1940 | 49 | 1943 | 100 |
1941 | 49 | 1944 | 76 |
1942 | 94 | 1945 | 44 |
Since August 1st, 1945, cases have been charged to the Council
at 14s. Od. per day, the total cost per case amounting to nearly £25.
Patients have been required to meet this charge subject to reduction
in accordance with the Council's scale of assessment. These
recoveries have reduced evacuation to a minimum even though
registrations were only from where home conditions were not suitable
for home confinement.
