The percentage of cases removed to hospital in 1945 was 93.7
against 92.3 in 1944. No case was refused admission as home
treatment of Diphtheria can rarely be adequate unless the disease
is extremely mild.
Antitoxin continued to be available for free issue to medical
practitioners at the Public Health Department during office hours,
and at all times at the Fire Station, Forest Road, and at Mr. Gaze's,
10, The Avenue, Highams Park. During 1945, a total of 31 phials,
each containing 8,000 units of Diphtheria antitoxin were issued.
There were 64 cases notified as Diphtheria or for Diphtheria
observation, and of these 16 were confirmed. Only one of the 16
had been protected and this was a case of bacteriological (i.e.,
swab positive) diphtheria without any clinical signs.
ENTERIC FEVER.
One case occurred in the Hoe Street Ward—a female, aged
28 years. She was admitted to hospital and recovered.
DYSENTERY.
A total of 84 cases of Dysentery was notified during 1945, as
compared with 83 in 1944.
The following tables show the incidence by months, ages and
