NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
1122 births (33 of which belonged to other areas) were notified
during the year under the Public Health Act, 19-36. Notifications
were received as follows:- doctors and parents, 113, midwives,1009.
Included in the above are 71 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 35 stillbirths, 1 of which did not belong to
the area. 5 were notified by doctors and 30 by midwives. Of
the total, one occurred outside the area.
REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS.

The Registrar-General's returns show the following registrations during the calendar year:-

Of the 1045 birth registrations received in the Department
between 29th.December, 1940, and 27th.December, 1941, a total of
7 were not notified in this area, but some may possibly have been
notified elsewhere. Appropriate action as taken when necessary.
Of the 1045 local registrations, 63 belonging to other areas
are excluded, leaving a nett total of 982,
ISSUE OF CLOTHING COITIONS TO EXPECTANT MOTHERS.
A special issue of clothing coupons became available to
expectant mothers from August 9th. 1941. These were issued by
the Public Health Department on production of a certificate
of pregnancy.
Up to the end of the year issues had been made to 731 expectant
mothers whose arrangements in regard to confinements were as
follows:- Dootors, 71; Midlives, 225; Nursing Homes, 49; Thorpe
Coombe Maternity Hosnital. 371: Evacuating, 15.

This scheme has had the effect of notifying all pregnancies and full advantage of this has been taken in follow-up visits by Health Visitors.
