The death-rates of infants under one year of age per 1,000
live births when calculated on the totals given by the RegistrarGeneral
are therefore:-
Legitimate, 45.0; Illegitimate,-40.0; Total, 44.8.
The Infant Mortality Rate for other areas during 1941 was
as follows:-

Neo-Natal Mortality.
The neo-natal mortality is the number of deaths of infants
under one month per 1,000 live births. During 1941, 31 infants
died in the first four weeks of life, yielding a rate of 23.7.
For the lest ten years in England and Wales the neo-natal
deaths have been approximately one-half of the total deaths
under one year of age.

The neo-natal mortality for England and "ales for the
decennium 1521-30 was 33.
The death-rate from Diarrhoea in children under one year
of age per 1,000 live births was 1.53.
CHILD WELFARE.
The equivalent of whole-time Municipal Health Visitors at
the end of the year was 7.5, equal to one whole-time Health
Visitor per 152 notified births, and one whole-time Health Visit
per 178 registered births during 1941.
