TO TIE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE MATERNITY
AND CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This report records another low infant
mortality rate (44), although slightly higher than that of
194C. The birth rate was below that of 1940, hut was the
second highest of the ten years to 1932.
The maternal mortality was, unfortunately,
the highest for many years and no fewer than five deaths were
due to abortion, illegal or natural.
During the year extra clothing coupons
were distributed to expectant mothers, and fruit juices to
infants and young children. This additional work was
cheerfully borne by the Staff.
I again have to record your consideration
and the good work of the Staff.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A.T.W.POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
