(vii) Swimming Baths and Pools.—The model bye-laws of
the Ministry of Health were adopted during the year.
(a) Municipal Baths, High Street.—This is a covered swimming
bath.
The Baths Superintendent kindly gives the following particulars
: —
"The Publio Bath is situated in High Street and contains
one covered swimming pool 129 feet long, 35 feet wide, 3 ft. 6 ins.
at the shallow end, and 6 ft. 7 ins. at the deep end. The capacity
is 150,000 gallons (approx.).
"It has a modern system of filtration, aeration and chlorination
plant by Messrs. Bell Bros., Ltd., and has a turnover of three
hours (50.000 gallons per hour), 0.3 to 0.5 parts per million of free
chlorine being aimed at.
"The plant was kept operating for an average of 12 hours
per day, the baths being open 153 days in 1938.
"The approximate number of swimmers in 1938 was 54,379.
The estimated maximum load was 964.
"Bacteriological and chemical analyses were carried out on
two occasions, with excellent results.
"There are 70 slipper baths in the building, with an ample
supply of hot and cold water. All towels and other requisites are
sterilised and freed from contamination."
(b) Whipps Cross Bathing Pool.—'This is a large open-air pool
situated in Epping Forest, in the area of the Borough of Leyton
and a few hundred yards from the Walthamstow boundary.
It is administered by a joint committee representing the two
Boroughs.
The pool is supervised by the Medical Officer of Health for
Leyton, who kindly sends a copy of the analytical findings when
samples are taken.
Sampling was carried out on 26th July with a satisfactory
result.
A chlorination and filtration plant has now been installed.
(c) South-West Essex Technical College.—This is a covered
swimming bath with a capacity of 160,000 gallons. It has a modern
system of filtration and chlorination plant by The Paterson
Engineering Co., Ltd., and a turnover period for filtration of four
hours.
