The bath will be used all the year round and was brought into
use on 22nd November. 1938. Sampling was carried out on the
9th December, 1938, with a satisfactory result.
(d) Forest School.—This is a small swimming bath with a
capacity of approximately 47,000 gallons, treated with "Voxsan"
with frequent changes of water. Sampling was carried out on the
4th July, 1938, with an unsatisfactory result.
(e) The Kingfisher Pool.—This is an open-air pool in Epping
Forest. Details were given in the 1935 report.
The Managing Director kindly gives the following particulars
: —
"The chlorination and filtration plant has a turnover of eight
hours, with a possible speeding-up to 6ix hours. 0.2 parts per
million of free chlorine are aimed at for the deep end and 0.6 at
the shallow end.
"The plant was kept in operation all day and night over the
week-ends, if found necessary.
"The approximate number of swimmers in 1938 was 21,928.
"Bacteriological and chemical analyses were carried out on
three occasions, twice with satisfactory results, and once with
unsatisfactory result."
(viii) Eradication of Bed Bugs.—The methods employed for
freeing infested houses from bed bugs are as follows:—
(1) By the use of Solution "D" Insecticide.
(2) ,, ,, "Zaldecide" Insecticide.
(3) ,, ,, "Fuminol" Insecticide.
(4) ,, ,, "Pyagra" Insecticide.
(5) ,, ,, Hydrocyanic Acid Gas.
(6) ,, ,, Sulphur Candles.
(7) ,, ,, Cymex Tablets.
The work of disinfestation is mainly carried out by builders
on behalf of owners. Those premises dealt with by hydrocyanic
acid gas were carried out on behalf of owners by a specialist firm.
Insecticide in the form of Solution "D" and "Zaldecide" has
been given gratis to tenants, and the free use of a sprayer is at their
disposal.
In the older parts of the town it is, to some extent, expected
that repeated action by builders and tenants is necessary, and it is
difficult to say definitely that disinfestation has been satisfactorily
carried out owing to the nature and structure of some of the older
houses, and in connection with this aspect I dealt with the matter
more fully in the 1936 Annual Report.
