8. Number of cases of pemphigus neonatorum—Nil.
9. Number of infants not entirely breast-fed while in the
Institution—95.
10. Number of cases notified as ophthalmia neonatorum—Nil.
11. (a) Number of maternal deaths—1.
(b) Cause of death in each case—Post-partum shock following
manual removal of retained placenta.
12. (a) Number of infant deaths:—
(i) Stillborn—22.
(ii) Within 10 days of birth—8 (amended from 7).
(b) Cause of death in each case, and results of post-mortem
examination (if obtainable)—See Clinical Report.
The stillbirth rate was 33.1 per 1,000 live births, and the
neo-natal mortality within 10 days of birth was 12.0 per 1,000
live births.
(c) Occupation of Beds.—The average daily occupation of beds
was as follows:—
January 32.4 July 16.4
February 33.3 August 20.6
March 31.3 September 27.6
April 30.8 October 27.5
May 32.6 November 31.4
June 30.0 December 24.0
The average for the whole year was equal to 73 per cent, beds
occupied (based on 39 beds).
(d) Financial.—Costing returns in respect of Maternity Homes
are required by the Ministry of Health for each financial year.
The return for the year ending 31st March, 1936, is as follows:—
