Details of the cases follow:—
(1) E.C. (6 years). 3/10/34 Schick pos. 10/10/34
Immunised with one (0.5 c.c.) dose A.P.T. (Alum Precipitated
Toxoid) 24/10/34 and 24/1/35 Schick neg. 8/2/35 sore throat,,
diphtheria bacilli present but non-virulent. Hemolytic streptococci
present. Diagnosis—streptococcal tonsillitis. 30/3/35
contracted scarlet fever. Virulent diphtheria carrier up to
8/5/35. 19/9/35 Schick neg.
(2) M.W. (5 years). Immunised by general practitioner,
but no posterior Schick test performed. Diphtheria bacilli
present 31/3/35—no clinical symptoms. (N.B.-Tests outlined
above unfortunately omitted.) Diagnosis-" bacteriological
diphtheria."
(3) P.C. (13 years). 19/6/34 Schick pos. Immunised
June-July, 1934, with three (1 c.c.) doses Toxoid Antitoxin
Floccules. 25/9/34 Schick neg. 21/6/35 sore throat, Schick
neg. Diphtheria bacilli present, but non-virulent. Hemolytic
streptococci present. Pseudo membrane both tonsils. Throat
clear in 36 hours. Diagnosis—streptococcal tonsillitis and
non-virulent diphtheria carrier.
(4) E.B. (12 years). 18/12/34 Schick pos. Immunised
January, 1935, with three (1 c.c.) doses of T.A.F. 26/2/35
Schick neg. 29/3/35 sore throat. Diphtheria bacilli present
(virulent). Hæmolytic streptococci present. Considerable
" pseudo " membrane present, but little toxæmia, and condition
gave rise to no anxiety such as would have been the
case if the same throat condition had been met with in an
unimmunised child.
(5) E.L. (10 years). 26/11/35 Schick pos. 3/12/35
0.2 c.c. A.P.T. 10/12/35, 0.4 c.c. A.P.T. 19/12/3S (i.e., when,
immunisation not completed) sore throat, virulent diphtheria
bacilli present. Hæmolytic streptococci absent. Clinical
condition resembled that of a mild tonsillitis, and the case
caused no anxiety.
(6) D.H. 5/2/35 Schick pos. Immunised with three
1 c.c. doses of T.A.F. 2/4/35 Schick neg. 26/11/35 sore throat,.,
diphtheria bacilli absent. Hemolytic streptococci present.
Pseudo membrane present on both tonsils. Patient quite fit
in four days. Diagnosis-streptococcal tonsillitis.
(7) L.S. 19/6/34 Schick neg. (i.e., a natural Schick
immune). 5/12/34 tonsillitis (diphtheria bacilli absent).
8/12/35 Schick neg., follicular tonsillitis. Non-virulent
diphtheria bacilli present. Hæmolytic streptococci present.
Diagnosis-streptococcal tonsillitis and non-virulent diphtheria
carrier.
