In the case of one patient who was admitted suffering from
Scarlet Fever, death was directly due to Congenital Heart Disease,
Scarlet Fever being only a remote contributory cause.
Complications.-Otitis, 23; Mastoid Disease, 2: Pyaemia, 1;
Chorea, 1; Suppurative Adenitis, 10 (some degree of Cervical
Adenitis was present in practically all cases); Recurrent Erysipelas,
1; Purulent Rhinitis, 12 (Diphtheritic, 8, Streptococcal, 4);
Septic Foot, 2.
In one case the Scarlatiniform rash proved to be the Prodromal
rash of Smallpox.
One case notified as Scarlet Fever proved to be Acute Rheumatic
Fever with Erythema Nodosum.
Cross Infection.—During the year 53 cases were transferred
from the Acute Scarlet Fever block to the cubicle block, and 16 from
the convalescent Scarlet Fever block.
The patients were transferred for the following reasons:—
Ringworm, 1; K.L.B. Throat or Nose, 17; Erysipelas, 1; Severe
Septic Scarlet Fever, 1: Impetigo Contagiosa, 9; Mastoiditis, 2;
Vaginal Discharge, 6; Adenitis, 10; Contact with Chickenpox, 2;
contact with Diphtheria, 2; observation cases, 2.
From Convalescent Block—Chorea, 1; Otorrhoea, 4 ; Adenitis,
4; K.L.B., 5; observation cases, 2. Total, 16.
Relapses of Scarlet Fever occurred in seven cases. In one of
these cases fatal ear complications supervened.
Staff.—Members of the Staff were admitted to Hospital beds
suffering from the following complaints:—Tonsillitis, 4; Rheumatism,
1; Influenza, 1; Diphtheria, 1: Sprained Ankle, 1.
Total, 8.
Swabs.—1,306 swabs were taken and examined during the
year in the laboratory at the Hospital.
Operations at Hospital.—Tonsillectomy, 4; Wilde's operation,
1; Deep Abscesses, 2; Specialist Consultants were called in
on seven occasions.
