were made by the Magistrates for the execution of the
necessary works, and in some instances fines were imposed.
The total amount of fines and costs recovered amounted to
the sum of £39 13s. 9d.
Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890.
During the year 27 representations were received from the
Medical Officer of Health with regard to houses unfit for
human habitation. In 18 cases orders were obtained from
the Police Magistrates, and the premises were closed.
Several cases of persons occupying after notice of the closing
order occurred, and in these cases summonses were issued
and convictions obtained. In 7 cases, the necessary works
having been performed, the closing orders were determined.
Sanitary Work.
A number of proceedings with reference to overcrowded
dwellings, underground rooms, bakehouses, cowhouses,
slaughter-houses, were taken, the details of which will be
found on reference to the Medical Officer's Report.
Lodging-house Regulations,
451 houses were, during the course of the year, under the
scope of the regulations, made under section 36 of the Sanitary
Act, 1866. These were regularly inspected. In 361 cases
notices for the abatement of breaches of regulations were
served, which were all complied with, excepting in 14 cases,
in which proceedings were taken. In some of these fines
were inflicted. The total amount of fines and costs recovered
was £5 3s. 0d.
