Rag and Bone Yards.
Fish Frying.
The first mentioned trade may be the source of a
pronounced nuisance if the raw hides are not stored
properly whilst awaiting treatment and if waste material,
consisting of trimmings, scrapings, etc. are not removed
frequently. Fortunately, complaints are seldom received
with respect to the Tanning Company's activities and it is
safe to assert that not many burgesses are aware that one
of the few oak-bark tanneries of this country is situated in
the shopping and business part of the town.
There is no change to record in the position regarding
Rag and Bone Yards. Constant observation is necessary
to prevent as far as possible nuisances from rats, mice and
flies.
At the end of 1935 there were 11 fried fish shops on
the records. Permission to commence the trade at a new
shop in Ham Common Parade was granted, but the applicant
did not pursue the matter further.
Three complaints were received during the year, two
of which referred to Rag and Bone Yards and the other
to fried fish premises. Twenty-eight visits were made to
offensive trade premises.
HOUSE DRAINAGE.
Fifty houses were completely redrained during 1935
and the drains of 7 other premises were repaired or amended
to a substantial extent.
The examination of drainage systems under the powers
conferred by the Public Health Acts is one of the duties
which is regarded as most important. These executive
duties necessarily absorb a considerable amount of time but
