COMMON LODGING HOUSES.
There are only two registered common lodging houses
in the Borough, viz.:—
Nos. 8 and 10, Vicarage Road (Othen,'s) SO beds for
men only.
No. 52, Canbury Passage (Marsh's)—35 beds for men
only.
As will be seen, there is no accommodation for married
couples or for children in the registered lodging houses.
The Vicarage Road premises were designed for the
purpose of lodging houses at the time of erection. The
Canbury Passage house on the other hand was converted
to its present use from that of a public house. The latter
premises has several drawbacks, but it is maintained in
clean condition and good repair having regard to the age
and lay-out of the building, but the premises are difficult
to keep free of vermin.
Occasionally a lodger in a verminous condition is
admitted to one or other of the Houses. Immediately such
conditions are found to exist action is taken to ensure the
effectual cleansing of the bedding etc. When cleansing is
impracticable the bedding is destroyed and is replaced by
new.
There were no changes of ' deputies' in charge of the
Lodging Houses during 1935.
Twenty visits were made to the registered Common
Lodging Houses during the past year.
OFFENSIVE TRADES.
The undermentioned trades which are established in
the Borough are classed as " Offensive " within the meaning
of the Public Health Acts :—
