Ninety samples of milk were submitted for chemical analysis, i.e. fat content etc., all of which were
satisfactory.
Ninety-two samples of milk were submitted for bacteriological sampling.
(b) Meat Inspection
The three licensed slaughterhouses in the borough continued to operate, and the following table shows
the number of animals killed and examined: -

There were 86 butchers' shops in the town (Including 3 Continental and 4 Kosher butchers) and these
remises were inspected with regard to general hygienic conditions and stock carried.
(c) Two hundred and eighty-nine premises remained on the register for the sale of ice-cream, of these 12
were new registrations. Twenty-two premises remained on the register for the manufacture of ice cream.
Adequate inspection of places of manufacture were carried out and 44 samples of ice cream were submitted
for bacteriological and biochemical examination; two samples of water ices proved to be unsatisfactory
and remedial action was taken at the place of manufacture. The samples were submitted for bacteriological
examination with, the following results:

Three samples of ice-cream manufactured at large manufacturers outside the district were unsatisfactory,
and the attention of the local authorities concerned was drawn to the results of the examinations.
(d) Other Foods
There were 121 premises on the register at the end of the year for the preparation or manufacture of
preserved food. These premises include such premises as sausage manufacturers and fish fryers. Of these
3 were new registrations during the year.
Arising out of the examination of a large variety of foodstuffs the following items were certified as unfit for human consumption:-
