SANITARY SECTION 1956/1967
This section of the report relating to the sanitary circumstances, housing, food inspection and
general routine work, of the Section has been completed by the Chief Public Health Inspector, Mr. D.G.
Tonkin, M.P.H.I.A.
The staff position during 1956-57 fortunately remained unchanged, as a large amount of extra work
was placed on the section, particularly in regard to the implementation of the Food Hygiene Regulations,
and the Rent Act 1957. The Council's decision that the Inspectors should assist tenants by giving them
information with regard to the completion of Form G. (Notice to Landlord of repairs necessary) resulted
ln inspectors spending much extra time on applications received. The service was much appreciated and
landlords too, often seek Information of the department with regard to repairs necessary.
During the period the department was busy with slum clearance inspections, and ln 1957 four areas ln
North Woolwich and Bonnydowns were represented. A total of 414 houses was involved and the Minister after
Public Enquiries confirmed the Orders made.
The Housing Act, 1957 became operative during that year and the East Ham Corporation Act, 1957 also
became law. This latter Act contains many clauses which are of assistance to the department.
In 1956 the designation of Inspectors was changed by Act of Parliament from Sanitary inspector to
Public Health inspector.
