For the period 1951-1955 the death rates for England and Wales and East Ham are compared:-

Of the total of 1,158 deaths 626 (54%) took place in institutions and 548 (47.3%) occurred
outside the Borough The number of non-residents dying within the Borough was 88.
Details of the numbers of deaths by causes and age groups are set out in table 3.
There was one death in 1955 from maternal cause the Maternal Mortality rate per 1,000 live
and still births being 0.67.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Deaths of infants under one year numbered 35-equivalent to an infant mortality rate of
24.2 per 1,000 live births,, the rate for the previous year being 19.6
The rate for England and Wales for 1955 was 24. 9.
The number of deaths of illegitimate children under one year of age was 1 out of a total
of 60 illegitimate live births, giving a mortality rate of 24.6 per 1,000 illegitimate live
births as compared with a figure of 71. 4 for the year 1954.
The infantile mortality rates since 1951 are as follows :-

NEO-NATAL MORTALITY.
The deaths of children under the age of four weeks totalled 25, equal to a neo-natal
mortality rate of 17.3 per 1,000 live births.
