Comment has been made already in the foreword on this serious matter Steps are being
taken by co ordinate action on the part of hospitals, general practitioners and local
authorities to ensure a bed will always be available in hospital for the reception of
cases of toxaemia of pregnancy and hæmorrhage which together are responsible for most
premature births.
Furthermore our medical and nursing staffs will redouble their efforts to supervise the
health and well being of our expectant mothers especially in relation to diet and weight
control In this way it is hoped to reduce the number of cases of toxaemia of pregnancy that
terminate in premature labour or labour at term with the issue of a dead foetus
In 1955 246 deaths 21 2% of the total number were attributable to cancer The numbers of
such deaths and the death rates from cancer per 1,000 population for the last five years are
appended:-
