POPULATION
The Registrar-General's estimate of the population at the 30th June 1955, was 116,100
as compared with 117,700 for the previous year. The rates per 1,000 of the population
mentioned in this report are based on this estimate.

The number of live births assigned to the area was 1,441 equivalent to a birth rate of 12.4 per
1,000 population.
The Registrar General has computed an Area Comparability Factor to facilitate comparison of the
birth rates in the various Local Authority Areas and the factor for East Ham is 0.95. The
corrected birth rate is therefore 12 4 x 0.95 11. 8. This corrected rate is used in all
comparison tables in this report.

STILL BIRTHS
The number of still births was 41 compared with 28 for the previous year. The rate per 1,000
total (live and still) births is 27.6 the figure for 1954 being 18. 0.

DEATHS
The number of residents dying within or without the district was 1,158 as compared with
1,143 in 1954 The death rate per 1,000 population is 9. 9, that for 1954 being 9.7
The Registrar-General has again supplied an area comparability factor and that for East
Ham is 1.05. The corrected death rate is therefore the crude death rate (9.9) multiplied
by 1.05 10. 4.
