For the period 1944—1948 the death rates for England and
Wales and East Ham are compared:—

Infantile Mortality.
Deaths of infants under one year numbered 58—equivalent
to an infant mortality rate of 26 per 1,000 live births, the rate
for the previous year was 30.
The rate for England and Wales for 1948 was 34.
The number of deaths of illegitimate children under one year
of age was one out of a total of 65 illegitimate live births, giving
a mortality rate of 15 as compared with a figure of 49 per 1,000
illegitimate live births for the year 1947.
The infantile mortality rates since 1944 are as follows:—

Children dying under the age of one month totalled 32, equal
