(e) Drainage.—Improper connections of foul water drains to
storm water drainage were found in several parts of
the Borough. The necessary alterations were effected.
Work in connection with the supervision of "sealing
off" of drainage from demolished houses and the renewal
of drainage and sanitary fitments of war damaged
buildings was retained by the Sanitary Section. This
arrangement with the Housing Department facilitated
the work of both departments in ameliorating the distressing
local housing and environmental conditions
arising from the war. 324 yards of drainage was relaid.
(f) Mosquito Control.—Treatment of mosquito infested
ditches with larvicide was undertaken during the year
with satisfactory results.
(g) Places of Public Entertainment.—The sanitary conditions
at cinemas and other places of public entertainment
were inspected during the year and a number of defects
and unsatisfactory conditions remedied.
Housing
During the year the housing situation had been made more
serious by the loss of further houses. The total number of houses
demolished in the Borough during the war amounted to 2,107.
With the reutrn of evacuees and service men and women serious
overcrowding was inevitable. At the end of the year the number
of applications for housing accommodation exceeded 4,000. The
housing need is such that it cannot be solved by houses within
the Borough on account of land shortage.
External development is therefore essential.
