Sanitary Section
Mr. R. A. Baskett, Acting Chief Sanitary Inspector,
has compiled this section of the Report relating to sanitary circumstances
and housing, and statistics in regard to food
inspection.
For the first half of the year the duties of the inspectorate
were directed almost entirely to emergency work in connection
with the repair of war damage to housing and drainage, the
supervision of the salvage and storage of furniture, the enforcement
of Food Orders and other emergency duties.
Upon the cessation of hostilities immediate steps were taken
to resume the routine work of sanitary inspection.
The supervision of the repair of war damage to houses, the
salvage and storage of furniture and other emergency work connected
therewith were taken over by a newly formed Housing
Department of which the Chief Sanitary Inspector Mr. J. E.
Austin, M.B.E., was appointed Chief Housing Officer. Four of
the District Sanitary Inspectors were seconded to assist in the
supervision of the repair of war damaged housing. Details of
the emergency work carried out by the Sanitary Section have
therefore been omitted from this Report.
Resumption of the normal work of the Sanitary Section was
impeded by the difficulty experienced in obtaining the services of
suitably qualified Sanitary Inspectors to fill vacancies. This
position was aggravated considerably owing- to the inability of
candidates to obtain housing accommodation locally. There was,
of course, the further difficulty of effecting compliance with
sanitary notices consequent upon the shortage of both labour and
materials for this work.

Details of the activities of the inspectorate in general
sanitary administration are contained in the subjoined statements.
