Bacteriological Examination.
During the year, 2,801 swabs were examined. Of this
number, 240 were found to bepositive.
Laboratory Work.
Investigations made included:—
Blood cultures 3
Blood count 1
Virulence test for K.L.B 1
Examinations of cerebrospinal
fluid 4
Examination of faeces for
typhoid bacilli 1
Culture of synovial fluid 1
Typing of blood group 1
Post-Mortem Examination.
A post-mortem examination on a patient who had been
admitted with a tentative diagnosis of scarlet fever showed death
to have been due to tuberculous meningitis and acute miliary
tuberculosis of the lungs.
Immunisation.
During the year, 278 immunising injections were given, 123
patients being thus protected against diphtheria. Of these, 38
were immunised with alum precipitated diphtheria toxoid (single
dose method). While this appears to be suitable in the case of
children, its use is contra-indicated in adults because of the severe
local and general reactions which ensue.
