PREVALENCE OF AND CONTROL OVER
INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
General.
On reference to the table showing total cases notified of infectious
diseases, 1910-33, it will be seen that there was a decrease
in the notifications received of Scarlet Fever for 1933. The disease
was somewhat more severe than that occurring the previous year,
and complications were not infrequent.
An increasing number of notifications in respect of persons
suffering from Diphtheria was received during the year. Many of
the cases were late in coming under treatment, and in some the
infection appeared extremely virulent and less responsive to
curative measures. No case of Scarlet Fever or Diphtheria was
refused admission to the Infectious Diseases Hospital.
The deaths from the seven principal zymotic diseases
(Smallpox, Whooping Cough, Measles, Diphtheria, Diarrhoea,
Scarlet Fever and Enteric Fever) during the year numbered 49,
equivalent to a zymotic death rate of 0.3 per 1,000 population, a
reduction of 0.1 in the death rate recorded for 1932.

I am pleased to report that only one case of Smallpox has occurred within the Borough during the year.
