General.
All members of the nursing and domestic staff are medically
examined and tested to ascertain their susceptibility to Diphtheria
and Scarlet Fever by means of the Schick and Dick skin reactions.
In those reacting positively immunization was offered.
Three probationer nurses and one member of the domestic
staff contracted Scarlet Fever during their first week and before
immunization could be obtained. These cases occurred during the
heaviest period of the epidemic and were due probably to mass
infection and a more severe type of illness then prevalent. Several
members of the staff succumbed to Influenza with fortunately
no untoward results, apart from the inconvenience and
disorganisation occasioned by depletion of such permanent staff.
