MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
In submitting the report on the work of the Maternity and
Child Welfare Department, a brief general account of its history
and development is given below.
Commencing in 1912 (under the Notification of Births Act,
1907, a voluntary measure), one health visitor was appointed,
who had the assistance of one voluntary worker. In a few months
six voluntary workers were enrolled and mothers were visited and
invited by the Health Visitor to attend a weekly Clinic, opened
in the Council's old offices in Wakefield Street. At the end of
1912, 472 mothers had enrolled their children on the Clinic register.
