Some stalls outside butchers' shops have had glass frames
fitted to protect the meat from dust and street mud. Notices
prohibiting handling are now exhibited in almost every shop.
The work of educating both the public and the butcher may
appear to be slow, but there is no doubt that progress has been
made.
Slaughterhouses.
There are 12 licensed slaughterhouses in the Borough and
454 visits were made during the year. The premises were
generally well-conducted and regularly limewashed and cleansed
in accordance with the Bye-laws. The increase in the number of
inspections is in consequence of the compulsory notification of
slaughter under Section 10 of the Public Health (Meat) Regulations.
The annual issue of licences is an important factor in maintaining
a standard of efficiency.
