DEATHS AND DEATH-RATE.
The deaths registered in 1891, inclusive of 250
deaths of parishioners at out-lying public institutions,
&c., but exclusive of deaths of non-parishioners at public
institutions within the Parish, were 3066, and were 317 above
the corrected decennial average (2749). Of these deaths
2445 belong to the Town sub-district, and 621 to Brompton.
The death-rate, which in the three preceding years was 17.1,
14 6, and 17.8, respectively, was 18.4per 1000, being 1.8 above
the decennial average (16.6), and 3.0 below the rate in the
Metropolis as a whole (2T4) this being 1.0 above the decennial
average (20.4). The rate in the Town sub-district was 20 5,
that in Brompton being 13 0. The rate in the male sex was 22.5,
that in the female sex being 15.8. In the Parish, as a whole,
there was one deatlh to 55.3 persons living:, the estimated
population at the middle of the year being 166,400. The
deaths of males were 1477, out of a total of 65,668 persons of
that sex, or one in 44.5. Of 100,732 females 1589 died, or one in
634. The deaths in the first and fourth or colder quarters
(1677) exceeded those in the second and third or warmer
quarters (1389) by 288. In the three preceding years consecutively,
the difference in favour of the warmer quarters
was 229, 74, and 293.
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
The deaths of children under five years of age always
bear a high ratio to total death: in 1891 this ratio was below
the average. These deaths were 968, the uncorrected
decennial average being 1038. The 968 deaths were equivalent
to 31.5 per cent. on total deaths, and to 25.1 per cent.
on births registered; the equivalent percentages for the whole
Metropolis were 36.9 and 24.9. The deaths under one year
were 633, the uncorrected decennial average being 627. These
633 deaths were equivalent to 20 6 per cent. on total deaths,
and to 164 per cent. on births registered: the equivalent
percentages for the whole Metropolis were 22.0 and 15.4.
