sub-districts respectively, being 3115, and 732. They were 17
fewer than in the 53 weeks registration year, 1890 (viz.,
3864: Town 3144, Brompton 720), and 194 fewer than in
1872, when the population (127,600) was nearly 36,000 less
than in 1891. The Kensington birth-rate, which is considerably
below that of London as a whole (31.8 in 1891) has
been declining since 1868, when it was 33.1 per 1000. In
1891 it was 23.l per 1000, and 1.7 below the decennial
average (24.8). The rate in the Town sub-district was 26.2,
and in Brompton 154 per 1000. There was one birth to
43.3 inhabitants, and 101.2 births of males to 100 of females.
The births of illegitimate children were 207 (15 fewer than in
1890), viz., males 117, and females 90. Of these births 192
were registered in the Town sub-district, which includes the
Parish workhouse, at which institution there were 144 births,
males 84, females 60 (including nine still-born; males 5,
females 4), 113 of which were illegitimate. In the Parish
generally, the illegitimate births formed 5.4 per cent. of total
births, as against 4.7, 5'4, and 5.8 per cent. in the three preceding
years respectively.

The subjoined Table shews the quarterly number of births of males and females in each of the sub-districts:-
