Milk Samples
Milk samples submitted for chemical analysis during the year
numbered 54, including 18 taken at hospitals, schools and day nurseries
in the Borough. The average fat and solids-not-fat contents of ordinary
milk samples analysed were 3.70 and 8.53 per cent respectively, while
those of the super-fatted variety were 4.70 and 8.84 per cent.
Butchers and Poulterers Premises
Bacteriological examination was carried out on 177 swabs taken
from preparation tables, utensils, etc. in poulterers premises, with
negative results.
Two persons employed in a poulterer's shop were summoned under the
Food Hygiene Regulations for smoking in a food room. Each was fined £2
with £1 costs.
The sale of minced meat containing sulphur dioxide preservative in
a butcher shop led to the institution of legal proceedings, the vendor
being fined £2 with £1 costs.
Public Health (Imported Food) Regulations. 1937-19A8
260 Detention Notices and 391 Release Notices were served under the
Regulations. These affected a variety of foodstuffs including agar-agar,
animal casings, cocoa, coconut, coffee, dried fruit, egg powder, ginger,
gum tragacanth, lard, senna pods, spices, sugar and tea.
Four consignments of animal casings, which arrived unaccompanied by
the official certificates, were subsequently released on production of
the certificates. A fifth consignment was re-exported.
Sausages (Meat content)
Analysis of 9 samples of pork sausages and 5 samples of beef sausages
showed the average meat content to be 75.9 per cent and 65.8 per cent,
respectively.
Unsound Food
The following quantities of unsound foodstuffs were disposed of during the year under the Public Health (Imported Food) Regulations 1937-48 and the Public Health (London) Act 1936:-
