About 80 tons of unsound food was allowed to be used for chemical
or animal feeding purposes, or for manufacturing purposes other than
for human consumption, the remainder being delivered to, or collected by,
the Public Cleansing Department at whose riverside depot it was mixed
with household refuse, under supervision, and removed by barge to a
controlled tipping site in Essex.
Approximately 1,500 Condemnation Certificates in respect of unsound
food were issued in 1963.
Unsound Food. Etc. - Complaints
Complaints made by members of the public as to the alleged unsound
condition, etc. of food, and which were investigated during the year,
numbered 43. The complaints referred to:-
Alleged unsound condition;
Apricot jam 1, bread 3, cake 1, chicken 1, confectionery 2,
corned beef 1, eggs 2, fruit and vegetables 1, liver sausage 2,
meat 1, meat pies 3, meat and vegetable dinners 2, potatoes 1,
salmon (canned) 1, tea 1.
Alleged dirty condition and/or foreign body or deposit:
Biscuits 1, bread 9, confectionery 1, dates 1, baby food 1,
lobster balls 1, meat 1, peas 1, sultana roll 1, general
foodstuffs 1.
Not of nature or substance demanded:
Chow mien 1, fish 1.

255 midnight or early morning visits and 79 other visits were made to Bishopsgate Goods Station for the purpose of examining 5,944 trucks of foodstuffs arriving from the following countries:-
