The Metropolitan Marriage.rate for 1898 was 18.7, being the
highest recorded for any year since 1877.
Births.
The Births registered in the Parish during the year numbered
1,854, 954 being boys and 900 girls; of the total number 555
were born in the City of London Lying.in Hospital, but as only
60 of the mothers were permanent residents in the Parish of
St. Luke, a deduction of 495 has to be made from this number,
leaving 1,395 as the actual figures which represent the Births to
be credited to the Parish, and after allotting 60 to the several
districts of the Parish in which the parents resided, the Births of
the respective sub.districts were as follows :—
The number of Births in excess cf the Deaths during the year
1898 amounted to 307.
The number of Births registered in London amounted to
132,432, giving a rate of 29'5 per 1000 of the population.

In the City Road bub.registration District there were 1,073; in the Whitecross Street Sub.Registration District there were 210, and in the Finsbury Sub.Registration District there were 76. In relation to the estimated population the figures stand as under:—
