CHILD LIFE PROTECTION.
The supervision of foster children and the homes of foster mothers was carried out by the woman sanitary inspector. During the period 39 visits were paid by her to child life protection cases.

ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN.
The Council continued to subscribe to the fund administered by
the Metropolitan Boroughs' Standing Joint Committee whereby annual
payments are made to the various Moral Welfare Associations. Close
co-operation is maintained with the various associations and in
particular with the Shoreditch Moral Welfare Association. The
births of 55 illegitimate children were registered during 1948.
MAYFIELD CONVALESCENT HOME.
This Home for ailing children aged 2 to 5 years was opened by the Council on 2nd June, 1939. It has accommodation for 15 toddlers, whose average length of stay was 23.5 days. The number of admissions to the Home each year since 1939 is shown below

EFFINGHAM HOUSE COPTHORNE.
During the early months of the year the Council continued to send mothers and children and old people in need of rest and change of air to Effingham House for a short stay. The number of admissions were as follows :-

At the same time application was made to the Minister of Health
for appropriation of Effingham House for use as a Holiday Home, under
Section 4 of the Fhysical Training and Recreation Act, 1937, and on
22nd April the Minister gave his approval. Further particulars are
given in the section of this report headed "Holiday Home".
