The birth rate for the Borough as a whole was 17.5. For England and
Wales the birth rate was 15.3 and for London 14.3. The illegitimate births
numbered 77, of which 41 were males and 36 females. Of these 29, of which
18 were males, occurred in St. Leonard's Hospital. The illegitimate births
