In most instances the insanitary conditions were rectified on the receipt of
notices from the sanitary inspectors, but in a certain number of cases there was delay
in the execution of the work required, and it was necessary to bring 30 of the workshops
under the notice of the Health Committee, by whose orders statutory notices
under the Public Health (Lond.) Act, 1891, were served upon the parties responsible.
In most of these cases the default was in respect to cleansing and general repairs for
delapidations. Altogether 30 statutory notices were served, but in no case did police
court proceedings become necessary.
In connection with the provision of the Act relating to home-work, it may be
mentioned that 21 lists of addresses of out-workers were received referring to some
357 persons. On examination it was found that 213 of these were not resident in
Shoreditch. Their addresses were duly forwarded to the Authorities of the districts
in which they were situate. Communications were received from other Sanitary
Authorities relating to some 807 out-workers. Of these 769 resided in Shoreditch.
The addresses of the remainder were sent on to the Authorities in whose districts they
were situate. Where necessary, enquiries were made into the conditions under which
home-work was being carried on. Although, in some cases, home-work had to be
stopped for a time on account of infectious disease in the dwelling, no action was
found to be required under sections 108-110 of the Act.
It is necessary to enter somewhat into particulars with regard to the action
taken this year by the Borough Council in respect to the
BAKEHOUSES.
