Cricket.—Pitches at Gadsden, St. Hugh's, Oakley Road and Hayes
Playing Fields fully booked except for an occasional date at Hayes.
Tennis.—Two hard courts and five grass courts at Gadsden, fully
booked throughout the summer for evenings and week-end play.
In addition, through the kindness of the Mother Superior, two courts
were available for Youth Clubs at the Convent ground.
Camping.—No official arrangements were made for camping, since
many of the clubs in the area prefer to arrange their own personal camps.
Cycling, Walking and Youth Hostelling offer wonderful opportunities
in this area. Organised runs and outings are part of the programmes of
most of our clubs during the summer months.
Conclusion. The progress of the development of all
branches of physical education in the Borough during the past
twelve months has been most satisfactory and augurs well for
the future. A new vigour seems to have infected the subject
and it is possible to look ahead and plan for the health and wellbeing
of individuals to enable them to face the stresses and
strains of everyday life after years of austerity and anxiety.
This is largely due to the keenness and interest of the teaching
staff generally and to their increasing appreciation of the
value and importance of their work in Physical Education.
I should like to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Borough
Education Officer and his staff for their continued support and
to the Head and Assistant Teachers upon whose loyal cooperation
the value of the work must ultimately depend.
F. M. BENTLEY.
