Training Courses for Teachers.
The following training courses for teachers have been held
during the year, and the attendance of Bromley teachers has
been satisfactory.
(1) Modern Dance.—Two advanced courses of instruction in Modern
Dance were held during the Autumn and the Christmas terms. We regret
the loss of the valuable services of Miss Bruce, who has been a source of
great inspiration and enthusiasm in this branch of the subject.
As a remit of the interest aroused by this class, the Kent County
Modern Dance Group was inaugurated, and terminal meetings have been
arranged in various parts of the County during the year.
(2) Swimming.—A ten session course of swimming instruction was
held at Beckenham Baths for teachers assisting with swimming instruction
in the schools.
(3) Dartford College Course.—At the end of the term (Summer) a
ten days' residential course was arranged by the County Authority at the
above College for teachers in both Primary and Secondary Schools.
Response in Bromley was not quite as good as was hoped for, and it is
anticipated that an improvement will be shown on future occasions.
«) Refresher Course.—A refresher course for men teachers in
Secondary Schools was held by Mr. John Barry. Chief Adviser for
Physical Education to K.E.C., during the Christmas Term.
Recreative Evening Classes.—These classes, arranged to
promote the mental and physical health of the adult community
through physical recreation, have, on the whole, been most
successful. On the women's side dancing still holds priority of
preference.
Classes were arranged in the following branches of Physical
Education:—
1. Recreative Physical Training for Women and Girls.
2. Recreative Physical Training for Men and Boys.
3. Advanced Gymnastics for Men.
4. Advanced Gymnastics for Women (short course).
5. Ballroom Dancing.
6. Scottish Dancing.
7. English Country Dancing.
8. Boxing and Physical Training.
9. Swimming.
Outdoor Activities for Youth Associations. Facilities have
been provided upon application for the following outdoor
activities and these have been fully used throughout both the
summer and winter months.
Football.—All available bookings for pitches at Gadsden, Oakley Road
Playing Field and Hayes Playing Field taken for all Saturdays and Sundays
throughout the season. It was found impossible to accept further
bookings.
