MEAT AND OTHER FOODS.
Slaughterhouses.
There are seven slaughterhouses recorded on the register of
the Local Authority. Apart from occasional slaughtering which
is carried out at two of these premises in connection with local
pig-keeping clubs, no slaughtering of animals is carried out in
the area, as the war- time policy of centralised slaughtering
continues to operate.
Annual licences were granted to six slaughtermen under the
provisions of the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933.
Inspection of Food Premises.
Details of visits of inspection made to Food Premises are
shown in Table X, from which it will be seen that a total of
2,538 visits were made, and 161 defects, etc., noted. A total of
175 defects were abated; this figure includes those noted in 1946
which were abated in 1947.

UNSOUND FOOD.
It is to be regretted that nearly 25 tons of foodstuffs were
surrendered as unfit for human consumption, although in some
cases it was found possible to utilise a certain amount for animal
feeding. Included in the total 14,869 lbs. of fresh and dried
vegetables are two consignments of potatoes totalling 6 tons
which were damaged in storage by flooding from burst pipes
following the severe frost in the early part of the year. The
whole of these two consignments were able, however, to be
utilised for animal food.
