(b) Deaf.
There are four children on the register who are so deaf as not
to be able to profit from instruction at an ordinary elementary
school. These children attend the Tottenham School for the Deaf.
(c) Mentally Defective.
Thirteen mentally defective children from Wood Green attend
the Joint Special School for Mental Defectives at Finchley. Some
of these are high-grade defectives who may be expected to do well,
and I am glad to say that many of the children who have attended
this school in the past have derived so much benefit from the
instruction given there, that they have been able to earn their own
living afterwards. The school is visited and the children examined
by the School Medical Officer at regular intervals. One mentally
defective child was at a residential institution, four were attending
ordinary elementary schools, and three were not at any school.
For this type of child, as well as for older mental defectives from
Wood Green and surrounding districts, the Occupation Centre at
Shropshire Hall in Gladstone Avenue performs a useful service in
providing occupation during the day. The mental defectives here
are medically inspected twice a year and treatment for dental
defects and minor ailments is provided at the School Clinic.
(d) Epileptics.
Four children suffering from epilepsy were in attendance at
ordinary schools. Three of these were very mild cases, the fourth
was of steadily increasing severity, and at the end of the year she
was sent to a Colony for Epileptics.
XIV.—NURSERY SCHOOLS.
There is no nursery school in Wood Green, but classes for children
under school age are held in two of the Infant Departments.
While these do not take the place of a Nursery School, they do meet
a definite need in providing a healthy environment during the day
for young children whose home circumstances are not too
satisfactory.
