I am also very grateful to the Palmers Green Samaritan
Society who have allowed us to send children to their Holiday Home
at Shoeburyness on very generous terms.
(d) Juvenile Employment Bureau.
The medical records of all children reaching school-leaving
age are handed on to the Juvenile Employment Bureau as soon as
the children leave school. These records are carefully examined
before being handed over, and a note made on them for the
guidance of the Bureau in all cases where unsuitability for any
particular type of work is indicated.
XIII.—BLIND, DEAF, DEFECTIVE AND EPILEPTIC
CHILDREN.
A register is kept of all defective children in the district, and
every effort is made to keep this register as accurate as possible.
It is based very largely on the results of the routine and special
medical inspections, but there are always a number of defective
children who are unable to attend school, and for information
about these children we are indebted to School Welfare Officers,
School Nurses, Health Visitors and others. All defective children
are kept under supervision and seen by the School Medical Officer
at regular intervals. Where the defect is such that a special school
is indicated, the necessary steps are taken to secure this provision.
{a) Blind.
There are no blind children of school age in Wood Green, and
only one child whose eyesight is so defective as to make it difficult
for her to benefit by instruction in an ordinary elementary school.
This child has been in attendance at the Partially Sighted School in
Lordship Lane.
This school provides accommodation not only for Wood Green
children, but for children from other education authorities. The
total number in attendance at the end of the year was twenty-eight.
Of these, sixteen belonged to Tottenham, four each to Finchley and
Edmonton, two to Middlesex, and one each to Hornsey and Wood
Green. A mid-day meal is provided at the school for children
unable to go home.
