the routine inspections were accompanied by parents or guardians.
At the entrants' examination 90 per cent. of the parents attended,
at the intermediates 75 per cent., and at the leavers 33 per cent.
The great majority of the parents are interested to receive any
advice given about their children's health, and ready to act on it,
and the success of the school medical work depends largely on the
active co-operation of the parents.
(b) Of Teachers.
We have always been able in Wood Green to count on the ready
and willing co-operation of the teachers in the schools in the school
medical work. The frequent inspections carried out by medical
officers, dental officer and school nurses made many demands on the
time and work of the teachers and especially of the head teachers;
and I am always glad to have this opportunity of thanking them all
for their assistance. Have also to thank the School Welfare Officer
for his assistance in bringing to our attention children unable to
attend school or requiring special consideration.
(c) Of Voluntary Bodies.
Of the voluntary bodies for whose help year by year the school
medical service is grateful, the principal is the Juvenile Organisations
Committee, to which I have already referred in connection
with the annual Children's Holiday Camp.
The Boot and Clothing Fund raised and administered by the
Care Committee has, as in former years, provided many of the
poorer children with boots and clothing.
To the Tottenham Deanery Council for Moral Welfare we have
been indebted as in former years for assistance from their representative
in dealing with children whose moral welfare has required
special consideration, and to the National Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Children for the assistance of the local
representative, Inspector Martin, in dealing with troublesome
cases where parents have been neglectful to obtain necessary treatment
for their children. The services of both these officers are
readily available at all times, and I am very grateful to them for
their assistance.
