time the District was separated from that of Tottenham, and it is
one of the outstanding improvements which have been effected
during the past few years.
Drainage and Sewerage.
All the premises in the District, with the exception of twofactories
at the extreme Eastern boundary of the District, a Church
Hall in the Town Hall Ward and four cottages in the Bowes Park
Ward, are connected to the Council's sewers, there being no
cesspools.
The system of drainage is dual, the soil drains being connected
to the main sewers, which are continued through Tottenham to a
pumping station in that district, from which the sewage is pumped
into the London County Council's sewers, by arrangement with
that Council.
The pumping station and main sewer in Lordship Lane is under
the control of a Joint Drainage Committee, consisting of representatives
from Tottenham and Wood Green.
The surface-water drains discharge into the Council's surface
water sewers, which flow into the Moselle and Muswell Brooks and
finally discharge into the River Lea.
The public soil sewers are periodically flushed and cleaned by
the Surveyor's staff, a gang of men being continually employed
throughout the year at that work.
Closet Accommodation.
Practically the whole of the District is provided with water
carriage system, and each house provided with water closet accommodation,
there being no privies, earth closets or slop closets, with
the exception of the factories, Church Hall and cottages previously
mentioned.
