The mechanical street gully cleanser mentioned in last year's
Annual Report continues to be hired under contract, and has
proved its usefulness beyond question.
Cesspools.—The number of cesspools remaining in the district
is 18. These continue to be cleansed periodically by a contracting
firm which carries out the work in an unexceptionable manner.
Roads.—There are now more than 81 miles of roads in the
district, made up as follows:—
County Roads 12.39 miles.
Arterial Roads 1.89 ,,
District Roads 52.01 ,,
66.29 ,,
Private Roads 15.03 ,,
81.32 ,,
Public Conveniences.—There are now three public conveniences
within the Borough, situated as follows: North Circular
Road, Palmers Green; The Triangle, Palmers Green; Fords Grove,
Winchmore Hill.
In addition to the above, there are available to the public conveniences
provided by the London Passenger Transport Board at
Southgate and Enfield West Underground stations.
Once again, I should like to plead the necessity for establishing
a public convenience to serve the New Southgate area.
Collection and Disposal of Refuse.—The system of refuse
collection detailed in the Annual Report for 1935 remains
unaltered, with the exception of certain operative details.
Minor complaints continue to be received and are dealt with
by the Surveyor's Department.
It is anticipated that a separate collection of garden refuse at
a small charge will shortly be instituted.
Once again it is pleasing to report that the district was free
from any serious fly or cricket nuisance during the year. Individual
complaints are occasionally sent in and receive immediate
attention
